8 Voice Polyphonic, 4 Part Multitimbral Wavetable Synthesizer

The Waldorf M Wavetable Synthesizer was modeled after the 1989 Waldorf Microwave and its successors the Microwave II and XT/XTk built through 2000(?). The Microwave itself was modeled after the PPG Wave which was built from 1981 to 1987.

Make no mistake, the M is a vintage Waldorf synth in its very essence. Thoroughly modernized to be sure, but vintage nonetheless.

The 2 wavetable oscillators can operate in either Classic Microwave 1 or Modern Microwave II/XT modes, and includes the original wavetables and patches from these synths. The 8 voices will be upgradable to 16 voices in 2022 with an expansion card.

The single filter is an analog -24db ladder type and the VCA is stereo analog as well. There are definitely unique sounds in this synth compared to the more modern fully featured Waldorf Quantum Keyboard or Iridium Desktop / Iridium Keyboard.

The M has 2 wavetable oscillators, and both use a common wavetable. However, each oscillator can play a different waveform or set of waveforms within that common wavetable.

The M uses wavetables with up to 64 waveforms per wavetable and 256 samples per waveform at 8-bit. It can import wavetables with up to 256 waveforms per wavetable, but converts down to 64 waveforms. There is no interpolating between waveforms in a wavetable.

The upper three entries in the factory wavetables (positions 61, 62 and 63) consist of the classic analog type waveforms triangle, pulse and sawtooth. Until I know differently, I’m going to assume user wavetables are converted into this format as well.
